I’ve been focusing on Author school visits at this end over the last week.
I have to say, it’s very easy to approach things the way you have always done. Head down and following a familiar pattern. But what if you need to break out of that pattern or way of thinking in order to move forward?
It was case and point at this end this week as I was working out whether cash flow at this end would allow me to arrange a second print run of James and the Birthday Balloon.
Now in itself, it’s awesome that I’m even considering a second print run, but there are a lot of costs involved and I was unsure of what to do next.
But then I thought about it some more and re-framed the way I was looking at the situation. Why not book in enough author school visits and then I knew I would be able to cover the costs for what I had in mind?
That way I could then progress with the order I had planned, and maybe even get some more copies sorted too.
And after a few phone calls that took only a couple of hours max, I’d already secured four visits, and I still have a lot of schools to reach out to.
My aim is to book in an additional six schools so that I have at least ten booked in, preferably by the end of July this year ahead of the summer break.
And so with all these things, and a renewed focus, my goal has been set and I’m working towards it.
The fact that Birthday Balloon has won two awards and I’m also fully DBS checked really does help. The popularity of a certain doctor (Dr Ranj) also helps too.
I’m so excited about being able to visit the schools and to be able to help inspire the children about reading and writing; it really is one of my favourite things to do.
And the thought that you’re having an impact on maybe just one child who decides ‘tonight I’ll go home and I’ll write a story, and who knows one day I’ll be an author too?’, well, that right there is the reason why I’m doing this.
Here’s hoping you have a great week ahead and remember sometimes it’s worth just re-focusing and looking at situations from a different, more positive outlook. Who knows where it might take you?
